As of Friday, I've been alone in Leuven. Xuan went off to Paris to meet her frens. I could have gone if I hadn't gone for the Romeo & Juliet play on Thursday evening. The R&J play was in Dutch, suitable for beginners in the Dutch language but I still had trouble understanding certains parts. Thank God I studied it before so I wasn't lost in translation. The play was funny, it's actually an animated version of the actually with most of the characters in the story played by 7 people. Cartoonic I would say!

So on Friday, I set off to Mechelen alone. It's only a 30mins train ride away from Leuven. I went there because of my Flemish Art paper; I'm doing on Gothic Architecture coz I like gothic! I seriously dun understand myself, always finding/liking this which are so tough to do (like the EU module I took, anyway I dropped it so I need to clear GRS in SMU). The bulk of my syllabus in Flemish Art is on paintings, yet I'm so intrigued by Gothic Architecture. And so I visited the St. Rombouts Cathedral in Mechelen. It's magnificient especially for a low countries area - it stands at 167m. When I went in...oh my gosh! It's so beautiful because of its stained-glass windows. The Last Supper, Jesus's birth & crucification and etc...was depicted. It's no small feat to create something so beautiful during the 16th-17th cetury. I'll post pictures up, promise! I walked round Mechelen but the place didn't have much as most we under-renovation or I couldn't find it...haha. I went to the Beguinge Church though, it's smaller than St Rombouts but had beautiful stained glass windows. It's a very old place under renovation on the exterior but the interior seemed abit not maintained. All in all...still a fruitful trip!

So now...I'm just blogging & letting time pass. Going out now, just walk walk & maybe I'll catch "An Inconvenient Truth" tonite! I feel that's a must watch movie for allof us as it's gonna affect us, this generation. Oh! Bim leow...your present from me will be given to you (provided you're coming lah!) or else, I'll pass it to you when I'm back in Singapore.

22nd Birthday in Leuven

It was a coincidence that almost all of us were October babies, other than Hung Yi (the one wearing a windbreaker & specs), so we celebrated it on 15th Oct 06 together. Here's a short video I took from my phone...so hope you're able to view it. Hee!

Enjoy!!!

I have some pictures too...

22nd October 06, 11:28

I was woken from my sleep by a call from him. I could have slept longer if he hadn't called at 10 plus am (belgian time), but I have to say that it was a pleasant surprise to hear from him. At least he didn't forget me, his friend for years eventhough he has a girlfriend. He said he had given tuition around my area, so stopped by at my place to meet up with me. It made me happy, thinking if he called me out because my birthday is around the corner, but I told him I'm overseas so we'll have to meet up at another day. He as usual, thick-skinned as he always have been, asked me to bring something back for him. How can someone be so not pai say huh? I just dun understand...

Today is laundry day. I went to have my sheets & jeans washed and eventually headed back. Upon reaching my room, my dear bim called. She misses me then started crying. I almost cried too because I can't be there for her when she needed someone most & to think she thought of me first. I so wish that I could give a punch to the jerk, not that violence could change anything or make things better, but it's the moment of giving it to him; that moment I know I am tougher & stronger than him, makes me feel good. I been wanting to do this for years, he better be thankful that I ain't in Singapore to give it to him (not that I can win him, but I wanna do it for my friend).

I can't say much over the phone, but I hope I did my best in keeping her focused & be a strong person. Take time to cry, it's your right & it doesn't mean you are weak, it's just that the pain is too deep; too deep for you to bear. So let time heal you, give yourself the time you need; dun force yourself to forget coz you nv will, a scar is left behind to remind you of your hurt but I always see the positive side of a scar - it reminds of our pain in the past, so dun follow the same path that had brought you pain. It juz means you didn't learn from your mistakes; it also reminds us not to treat others the way that we have suffered coz no one deserves such treatment; it also reminds us that a scar heals not by ourselves, but with God, family & friends, people who loves us that's why we are mentally strong enough to want to fight the pain & let it heal. Everything has an upside & downside to it - what matters is which perspective you wanna take when you experience pain! If it doesn't kill you, it only makes you stronger.
This is for you bim:

"When we are struck at without a reason, we should strike back again very hard; I am sure we should - so hard as to teach the person who struck us never to do it again."

quoted from Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre

I'm telling you to do anything to the jerk, but ignoring him & not doing anything is also a way of striking back. Heck whatever he says...anyone can say that, I can also to lip service *hee* but actions speak louder than words. Dun carry this burden by yourself, remember FOOTPRINTS? yupz! Let Him take over okie? I love you sis, so love yourself too!

Here I also wanna thank Xuan for cooking me a good dinner. She cooked moi my favourite black fungus with dao kee (a luxury good over here coz it's expensive) & vegetables. I was surprised coz I was expecting to be cooking too only to find out that everything was ready. That was really nice of her. Also...thank you all who have left me a msg in msn, sms, phone...thank you! As I'm blogging this entry, Ms Leow called moi as it's midnight over here...haha & that means she have to head for school. Thankz bim!

Netherlands Trip

Xuan & I went to The Netherlands for a short weekend trip. We travelled from Maastricht to Den Haag, and within distance to Den Haag, we went to Leiden. In Maastricht, it's like a university town but with alot of shopping centres & restaurants. Apparently, Maastricht is more uptown and the rich stays there. In Den Haag, there's the Parliament and the office where the royal family works. Oh! Over here is the museum - Mauritshuis - which holds the most famous painting of Jan Vermeer's "Girl with A Pearl Earring". This painting, I feel is similar to The Mona Lisa because the girl seems to look at you no matter which part of the room you go too. Beautiful painting. Lucky for us, the museum was also showing paintings of Rubens & Brueghel which is related to our Flemish Art module. I was mesmerized by their art pieces, it just looks so exquisite.

Next stop was Leiden, where we went to see windmills. Do you know about a century ago, Netherlands had about 10 thousand windmills, to a mere 950 now. In Leiden, the windmill named De Valk (used for corn-milling) is the sole-surviving one in Leiden open for tourists. Now, most windmills around are the electric windmills. Windmills was first created by the Romans. I realise that the Romans created alot of stuff, like windmills, paintings etc...they are such innovative people. I was looking at the structure of the windmill, I mean...they are so smart! They didn't have to study physics to know the Law of Mechanics to create something so magnificent, but now we're studying all subjects, yet the level & number of innovations that are life-changing aren't many. So why study so much? Haha...

I will post the photos soon so you will know the beautiful places I've been too ; )

20th October 06, 22:00

I'm in my bed in this Stayokay Hostel in Den Haag (The Hague). It's an 8-bed room & I think this is really a good place to stay for a cheap price. We travelled by train from Maastricht & like Leuven, it's small but still bigger than Leuven. Guess what? Upon reaching the Central at The Hague, we saw the first Burger King in Europe. We settled our dinner there. We didn't see much today as we arrived in the evening. Tomorow will be a day of adventure.

Now, Xuan & I are chatting with a girl form Eindhoven. She's really friendly & nice. Definitely younger than us, but really funny & interesting. Glas to meet a local & so chatty & cute. Haha...I'm old, I know that! Okie I'm tired. Peace Out!

20th October 06, 00:14

What a long time since my last entry. I was busy, busy with my vcds. However, my past week isn't just my vcds & myself. Last weekend, I went to Ghent with a group of ERASMUS strudents on exchange in Leuven - 2 French, 2 Italians, 3 Hungarians, & us, the 3 Singaporeans. Ghent is a beautiful place with rivers & beautiful architectures, we also went to the shop that sells the best fries in Ghent. Nice! Yummy! we visited SMAK (Stedelijk Museum vor Actuele Kunst) which featured contemporary art (this is totally not my kinda art) it's really difficult to understand. After that, we went to the St. Baaf's Cathedral where I saw "The Adoration of The Lamb" by Jan van Ecyk. The panel piece was MAGNIFICENT in every sense. A beautiful piece of art created during the midieval times.

Then, we headed to this pub that serves 250 types of beer. Cool yeah? Runli where are you, my drinking kah kee? We sat, drank & chatted before we headed back to Leuven. It was a pleasant trip because this grp of friends were great company! On this night, Caryn, Hung Yi, and Yuting was coming to Leuven sa Xuan & I waited for them upon reaching back. Caryn was my roomie & she was such fun & we're quite similar. She loves to eat (like moi); she laughs like a witch while I sound like a horse. Hee! Xuan & I brought them to Dewerf's for breakfast on Sunday & around Leuven but nothing really opens on Sundays, it's a boring town over the weekend. As it was Xuan's birthday, & Yuting's on 16th Oct, & Caryn's on 17th Oct, we decided to celebrate it together. So we cooked dinner together & Hung Yi cooked mee sua for Xuan & I. So sweet of her to do so. Then we all cut 2 cakes that we bought. It was a mini & joyous celebration but this also made me think of my bimbos & many other dearies. It'll be a full day of lessons for me on my birthday.

Today, I'm in Maastricht, Netherlands at Ford's place. It's small over here too but bigger than Leuven. We had homecooked noodles for dinner & met 2 Hongkongers who were headed for Copenhagen, & they were so kind to offer their room for Xuan & I (I mean they are so kind right?) which made me think how good God is. I was worrying how to settle sleeping area problems over here but He offered this to us. He solved my problems. I'm so amazed by His powers!

Tomorrow, I'll be heading for The Hague. I'm so excited...will update soon ^_^

Missing You

I dunno why but I'm missing you! Weird to feel that esp. when time shld have let these feelings away from me. It shld have left me when I made my decision years back, but...I have so many questions for you which I feel is useless to ask. I'm an explanations kinda gal, can't stand leaving things hanging...I will think alot, make wild guesses, making myself feel that I didn't do something right. I need answers...BUT not everything in life has answers. OMG! How am I gonna survive???
ARGH!!! Silly char...silly me. I'm a silly girl..

Something more upbeat!
Today was Kin yew's birthday! Remember the NUS Law undergrad? Yah! So 巧! Kin yew's, Xuan's & moi's birthday all falls in October 10th, 15th, and you shld know when's mine. Anyway, his celebration quite happening coz he has his roomies to celebrate for him & many other frens. I wasn't part in much of the fun as my EU class ended at 10pm, so I arrived later.
So weird...all October babies.

Cheryl...so it's really tough to let go someone so impt to us, but somehow we have to do it rite? Coz it's the right thing, is it?

一个像夏天,一个像秋天

This is the lyrics of the song in my blog.

The Rainbow Connection

This song is sang by Sarah McLachlan. Very beautiful song. I think it's from The Phantom of The Opera. Wanted to d/l the song but dunno where to find it.

The Rainbow Connection

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it.
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard
and answered when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that and someone believed it.
Look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us star gazing
and what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell. We know that it's probably magic.

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors.
The voice might be one and the same.
I've heard it too many times to ignore it.
It's something that I'm supposed to be.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Happy Mooncake Festival

hey hey hey! 中秋节快乐! How did you celebrate this day?

For me, over here i celebrated with Xuan & Kin Yew. We invited him over for dinner since he's the only other Singaporean over here. We cooked some dishes & he brought over "宫宝鸡丁" (okay i dunno whether this is the correct words) which he cooked and dinner was very filling for the 3 of us. After that, we sat down and had mooncake with hot chinese tea. Nice ah! However, it was raining today & it's cloudy so we couldn't see the full moon. On the whole it's a wonderful nite with us making the best out of it here ; )

As for yesterday, my Flemish Art lecturer didn't turn up only to have us know it late yesterday noon when a notice was posted online after. How inefficient & irresponsible of the lecturer & the office. Apparently over here, we can't be late for our classes (or risk being thrown out of class) BUT the lecturer can dun turn up & considered cancelled when they dun appear 15 mins after the stated lecture time. SO....i also dunno how to put it.
It was a very very cold morning on Thursday, so Xuan & I went looking for a famous cookie place in Leuven since I hadn't had breakfast. Finally we found it after walking round in the cold looking for the place - it's called Dewerf.

Dewerf

It's a tight and cosy place. Good place to go to in such a cold weather. Looking thru the menu, we looked for something to have for breakfast. We wanted to share a small breakfast as it seems quite alot but can't (it's like buffet still where we can top up bread etc) to prevent free-riding. So 2 Small Breakfasts were ordered.

2 Small Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs, 2 bowls of cereals, fruits, milk, lots of Nutella, butter & apricot jam.

Okay i'm not a gd photographer so you can't see everything we had but i tell you. It was ALOT! It was such a hearty breakfast that we can barely walk out after. We didn't try thre cookie thingy yet...but I'll Be Back! Then we just walked around, 顺便 go find a backpack that I need (my luggage gave way when I was here). Then headed back...as usual...simple day!

We're in my favourite month - October! Haha

04 October 06, 01:00

Yupz it's 1am over here and I'm still awake. I juz finished revising my Dutch for tomorrow morning's class. I hope I'll make it. I had the EU class last nite and ***news flash*** Xuan's gonna drop the class so I'm gonna take it alone. I dun mind taking it alone, but it's just that this course is very challenging for me. Most people are from the European countries or the USA, and they have background knowledge of the EU which clearly I do not have. Come on...I'm from Singapore, what kinda of Union are we in when we're in such a small country, other than her "beautiful" creation of the NTUC. How do we begin comparing? Sometimes I can't follow the class, they raise wonderful questions which I wouldn't even think of or have any knowledge of. The stressful thing is I have to submit a paper on it, and I'm gonna be oral-examed. The average grade here is low (12/20 and the University thinks for us to get tt grade is very good already!) and failing is uncommon for exchange students. OMG!!! Imagine failing for this EU course? Seems plausible huh? Can I even measure up?

In addition, Xuan is gonna drop her Organisation Psychology course coz she can't understand the prof, with that she's only attending class on Weds & Thurs (long hols for her) which I won't have the luxury of. I'm gonna be a lone ranger, facing tough challenges in front of me. I think stress is definitely building up (which is as usual for me) but somehow, I try to keep things in perspective. I mean I'm taking this course coz I have to clear the GRS credit in SMU, but more to that, I wanna learn something new & different which isn't common in Singapore. So I can't just give up & surrender rite? I mean...I can do this with God's strength rite? I just have to commit my burdens to Him, and He'll carry me through it. Like "The Footprints".

Downside to this is I have the exams to take for each course & have lesser time for travelling. Haiz...cheryl you know if you come, I know we'll be able to travel many places & we're gonna have fun. With you, sure fun!!! Haha...during times like this, I just need to talk to someone but under such circumstances I blog...ARGH!!!...no privilege of calling out...hee hee. I'll be fine! Okie me go sleep liao. Peace out!

03 October 06, 00:44

Today's my 小弟's birthday & I haven't wished yet. Better go wish him now! Had a full day of lessons & after my Dutch class, I went to KBC to play some bball. Basketball was as usual, similar to how we 打队 over in Singapore. Oh! I met a Belgian student form the bball session. She's a Year 4 student in K.U. Leuven but she's only 21 (so young!) & her name is "Ellen" I think. Nice person! Had a fun session & now I'm too tired to read my EU notes...as usual...lazy me!

Today I had fun classes like my Exchange Risk Management class coz the professor was funny, oh & we might be able to view a 'live' trading at ING. Cool right? After that, was 2 hours of Dutch. The horrible thing is the whole lesson is taught in Dutch, no English at all!!! She actually used Dutch to explain a word...OMG! Dunno what I'm throwing myself into. However, I got help from some Germans coz they understand Dutch (similar to German) but just dunno hoe to speak & write right. Lucky them! I pray that God help me through this course. I'm tired. Nitez!
